World Science Forum - Opening Addresses

Tudomány Világfóruma - Megnyitó beszédek

09:00-09:40

President, World Science Forum (WSF): József Pálinkás, President, Hungarian Academy of Science (HAS)

A Tudomány Világfpresident-of-world-science-forum-józsef-pálinkásóruma és a Magyar Tudományos Akadémia (MTA) elnöke

Professor of physics, University of Debrecen (UD). He graduated from Attila József University at Szeged. He started to work at the Institute for Nuclear Research (ATOMKI) of HAS in Debrecen. His area of research was the experimental examination of atomic collisions. In 1994, he became involved in particle physics research carried out at CERN’s LEP joining the OPAL experiment.

From 1998 through 2002, József Pálinkás served first as Secretary of State, then as Cabinet Minister of Education in the Hungarian Government. In 2008 he was elected as president of HAS. In 2009 he was elected member of Academia Europaea and since 2010 he serves as vice president of European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC).

Pálinkás József beszédében jelezte: a WSF háromnapos rendezvényén megvitatják majd, mely területeken lenne kívánatos a tudomány képviselőinek szemléletváltása, mit tud felkínálni a tudomány, és adott kutatásokhoz milyen támogatásra van szükség a kormányzatok részéről. A WSF mint világrendezvény egyedülálló alkalom a közösséggel való párbeszédre: megismerhetővé válnak a különféle kultúrák körülményei, elvárásai és eredményei, így könnyebb azonosítani a megújuló tudomány előtt álló kihívásokat.

He was also Prime Minister from 1998 to 2002 and is currently the leader of Fidesz, which in alliance with the Christian Democratic People's Party in the 2010 elections won 52.73% of the votes and a two thirds majority (supermajority) of seats in the parliament of Hungary.

Orbán studied law at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest. He was a founding member of the Fidesz party. (an acronym of FIatal DEmokraták SZövetsége which means "Alliance of Young Democrats" in Hungarian), which was formed on 30 March 1988. On 16 June 1989, Orbán gave a speech in Heroes' Square, Budapest, on the occasion of the reburial of Imre Nagy and other national martyrs of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. In his speech he demanded free elections and the withdrawal of Soviet troops. The speech brought him wide national and political acclaim.

Orbán and his wife have five children. He is very fond of sports, especially of football; he was a signed player of the Felcsút football team, and as a result he also appears in Football Manager 2006.

WSF 2011 - Video (in Hungarian)

A jelenlegi, globálisnak mondott válság a világpiac átrendeződése mellett a tudomány világát sem hagyja érintetlenül: korábban tudományos tekintetben kevésbé számottevő régiók tudásközpontjai emelkedhetnek fel – mondta Orbán Viktor miniszterelnök.

"Tegyünk érte, hogy a tudomány ereje mindenütt megmutatkozzon, a kutatók, mérnökök, vállalkozók, befektetők új generációja fogjon össze, működjön együtt a politikai döntéshozókkal".

Irina Bokova, Director-General, UNESCO irina-bokova-director-general-of-the-UNESCO

Irina Bokova was Ambassador of the Republic of Bulgaria to France and Monaco, Personal Representative of the Bulgarian President to the "Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie" and Permanent Delegate to UNESCO from 2005 to 2009.
Born in 1952, she obtained an MBA from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations and studied at the universities of Maryland and Harvard in the USA. During her long and distinguished career, she also served as Bulgaria's representative to the United Nations and as her country's Secretary of State for European integration and Foreign Minister. Ms Bokova has long promoted the transition to European integration. As Founder and Chairperson of the European Policy Forum, she worked to overcome divisions in Europe and promote the values of dialogue, diversity, human dignity and rights.

Minden társadalom látja, érzékeli a kihívásokat, a megoldások érdekében pedig a tudomány képviselőinek minden szereplővel párbeszédet kell folytatniuk – szögezte le Irina Bokova, az UNESCO főigazgatója. A tudomány helyzetét bemutató összefoglalók azt jelzik, a kutatási együttműködések egyre fontosabbá és szorosabbá válnak a világban. Növekszik a tudománydiplomácia jelentősége, ami szintén segítheti a tudás áramlását.

Yuan-Tseh LeNobel-laureate-yuan-tseh-lee-president-of-icsue, President, International Council for Science (ICSU)

Yuan-Tseh Lee is a Taiwanese born chemist best known for his Nobel Prize winning work in the field of crossed molecular beam research. Lee has garnered additional attention for his involvement in Taiwanese politics.

His subsequent discovery of a biography of Marie Curie imbued him with an idealistic vision of the life and role of the scientist.

In 1986 he received the Nobel Prize, along with Herschbach and Canadian scientist John C. Polanyi for their joint work in crossed beam molecular research, or more particularly, "for their contributions concerning the dynamics of chemical elementary processes." Their groundbreaking work made it possible to analyze much larger and more complex chemical molecules than those previously studied.

The first Taiwanese born Nobel prize winner, Lee renounced his U.S citizenship in 1994 and returned to his country of origin, determined to use his now considerable influence and prestige to better the life of the Taiwanese people.

World Science Forum 2011.

A WSF 2011-en Alan I. Leshner az ICSU elnökének gondolatmenetét folytatta: "Példátlan kihívások idejét éljük. A modern életnek nincs olyan részlete, amely ne kapcsolódna valamiképp a tudományhoz. Mindez komoly kötelezettséget ró a tudományra. Miközben a tudomány változik, maga is változtat a világon, amelyben működik.

Aloizio Mercadante - Minister of Science and Technology, Brazil

Aloizio-Mercadante-minister-of-science-and-technology-brazil

Economist Aloizio Mercadante Oliva took part in the preparation of government programs for the PT (Workers’ Party). He ran as Vice-President in the 1994 elections alongside Lula.

A professor-in-leave with the Pontifical Catholic University of Sao Paulo (PUC-SP) and the University of Campinas (Unicamp), Mercadante served as PT’s national vice-president and secretary for international relations, and was also part of the National Directory and the National Executive Board of the party. In 1990, he was elected for his first term as PT’s best voted federal deputy. In 1999, he was back to the Chamber of Deputies as the country’s third best voted deputy. While running for Senator in 2002, Mercadante became the best voted in the country’s history – with over 10.5 million votes. At the Senate, he served as Leader of the Government until June 2006, when he decided to run for State Governor in Sao Paulo. In 2008, Mercadante chaired the Senate’s Commission for Economic Affairs (CAE), and was elected Chairman of the Brazilian Representation in the Mercosur Parliament.
